In the true spirit of being a total amateur I have started taking live photos. This involves taking about a million photos of the same band on the highest ISO know to The Canon G10 and then tweaking in iphoto. Currently my crack code for photoshop is not working.

Anyways I have had some photos publish in Rockin On (equivalent of the NME), Metropolis (English Magazine in Tokyo), Elle Girl and Nylon Japan.

Currently at the Mori Art Museum which is the 53rd Floor of Roppongi Hills is an Exhibition called CAN THERE BE ART? where my favourite installation is by Masuru Aikawa (pictured above). Ive copied and pasted from his website below as I am lazy but basically he had beautifully hand painted some of the most iconic CD/Record sleeves of the last 50 years. At first it sort of looks like a record shop but when you start looking you release that even the price tags and inside booklets have all been painted, replicated exactly. There were also listening posts where you could hear version of tracks by Neil Young, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix etc. as sung by Aikawa. These are pretty funny.

Its a representation that in this day and age music is replicated over and over, from the begin through Vinyl and CDs and now through digital downloads. Each time the quality and the price is diminishing. These days with the WWW you can download album upon album for free. Artists have to give away taster mp3 before their first single or they have to stream the album a weeks before advance... It all an age where the consumer wants everything for free people don't value recorded music anymore which is bit scary if you work for a record label. I mean for me I am all up for bands releasing music directly to the fans, cutting out the record label but it still doesn't stop the fact the these generations don't value recorded music. Just over the last 4 years since working in music friends will say its ok because I pay premium on Spotify once a month so atleast am not stealing music or I pay to go see them live. Recorded music is an artform. Its not the same using Spotify, going to see them live and putting the single on your ipod.

With art you appreciate the original. The value of buying art has still be kept in place even if the artwork is copied via postcards or photos. People travel to the gallerys to see the original. I know you could argue that its the same as going to see a band live but its not. A piece of art like recorded music is an object created at a certain time. A live band is an evolving thing and is a different experience every time it happens.

Music through the years has been replicated over and over into smaller and smaller more worthless versions. A musician puts together an album worth of work in a certain order with hours and hours spent in recording studios getting the perfect guitar sound, mix of drums etc. Then we take that art and shove it online and people take what they want. What is worse is that Japanese kids download songs on to their mobiles sometimes only one minutes snippets. I mean Jpop isn't seriously an artform but still that industry doesn't even bother the Japanese public with the concept of an album. Kids download snippets or tracks so they can learn them and sing them at karaoke with their mates. A generation of kids that dont know what its like to hold a CD let alone make a tape mix tape. It makes me so happy that I experienced taping my favourite songs off Radio1's Top 40 on a Sunday Evening. On the radio here you hear one minute of a pop song on the radio and then its cut because thats all the record label could afford. You wouldnt be happy if you went to an art gallery and half the painting/installation was missing. Its scary time for good music in Japan unless you are Deerhoof or Cornelius.

Anyways what started as a short blog post has ended up being a mildly confusing rant. With half finished and started ideas and grammatical errors all over the place.

I guess the installation out of all of them there really answered the question Can There Be Art? for me personally.

Those CDs covers are duplicated in acrylic on canvas. Each CD cover is accompanied by handwritten lyrics and inserts, as well as an actual CD on which I have sung the songs myself and recorded them. I have passionately and respectfully duplicated the music a cappella.

It has been more than 70 years since Walter Benjamin advocated “The disappearance of AURA” in his book “Das Kunstwerk im Zeitalter Seinter Technischen Reproduzierbarkeit.” Today, reproduction technology is rapidly progressing, notably in the field of music.

Tips:

I can not play any instruments.
There are many copy bands, but I am the best.
I love music more than pictures and sculptures.

When I am creating my work, I can be the musicians whom I respect and love.
I sometimes think that I am cool when I sing song ardently.
To choose CDs from my favorites, was difficult but fun.
I think the jackets of Heavy Metal CDs are cool.
I like “Megadeth” more than “Metallica”.
The good jacket has good songs on the CD.
I hate “Greatest Hits”.
I never buy songs from the “iTunes Music Store”.
A lot of illegally copied CDs are sold on the streets of Asia .
I am a Japanese, and a Japanese are good at mimicry.
I think “iPods” are useful.
I love the works of Andy Warhol.
I sympathize with "D.I.Y" mind of the punk / hard core.
It is possible to listen to my song only in the exhibition.
The works of CDs are duplications, but nevertheless are myself, and also my original work of art.

Perfume Genius

I am in love with this kids album. He recorded each song the day he wrote them at his mothers house and put them on the album in that order too. Its pretty emotional dark tracks but the album has such warmth from the lofi recorded charm. Lofi in a good way not in a shit on purpose way. As with mainy new bands I get into the boys at Transparent are have released a 7inch by him.

Not to get all heavy and shit but Japan has a super high suicide rate. A kid I went to school with when I was 14 here jumped off a building and another friend hung herself 3 years ago. Depression is not counted as an illness here and rather than getting helped you become a social rejections. Anyways his songs are really beautiful and moving... and what I have mostly listening to this week. Plus he has a beautiful face. I think I may be slightly in love with him.

Dommune

Gold Panda has been in Tokyo for the last month or so playing shows and we have been hanging out. I went to see him play live last night at Dommune. Fun. I dont want him to go back to London now. Tiger and Panda.

Dommune is the future. They stream the artist live from the venue in real time. I know lots of places stream live on the internet these days but the quality is really good and they have a a sort of VJ chap switching the camera angles and lighting from the back. Last night 4500 people were watching online and the twitters coming in every 10 seconds. I got excited as you felt like you were taking part in something more than just a gig... plus the atmosphere in Dommune is amazing as its tiney tiny... maybe 30/40 people max. They stream every weekday from 9 - 12.

I will be going again for sure.

This is an exhibition in Happa Gallery right by my house in Yutenji. They currently have a collection of photos from different prefectures in Japan taken of peoples old school routes and home. Its such a beautiful collection and even made me a little emotional after only spending three years at school in Japan. This dog looks exactly like the dog my cousin used to have called Chako Chan.

When Japanese people get drunk they dont get violent, scream or shout like British men. Instead they fall asleep in bars, or on the train, go super red in the face and sometimes they are sick. This chap was at Shibuya Station at around 11 on Saturday night.

My proper camera ran out of battery so its just rubbish camera photos but this is an bright neon 24hr bowling lanes in shibuya. In the days of new rave this would have been the perfect place for the klaxons to have shot a video. You can take your own booze from the convenient store too.

I`m working in Tokyo now for a lovely record label/distribution company called Hostess. My email is tiger@hostess.co.jp if you want to send me any spam. Thats the best email address I`ve ever had.

I`m luckily not working on the latest J-Pop creation but only on western music. We have Andrew Bird and The Horrors here this week.

Bands are big in japan anymore. Sales are declining as they are all over the world but the worrying thing about Japan is there is no illegal download culture. People still buy CDs or at worst they borrow them from a music rentals. They just don`t buy much western music. It`s only 10% of the market and that includes all The Killers and Coldplay purchases. Digital downloads do very much exist but mostly via the mobile phone where customers are getting really bad quality mp3s, sometimes not even full length, for 400Yen for a track, which is about 2.80GBP.

I went to an amazing second hand record shop just buy where I am staying and I got hold of Diana Ross, Hall & Oats, Beatles, Neil Young records for 100 Yen each! There is a massive hip hop section I want to educate myself with. If that was in Dalston it would have been raided by now. They need to hand out Spotify Premier subscriptions to all the kids out here.

Anyways I`m working here for quite a while. Fun.

Karl Marx and Chinese Tourists in Berlin January 2010. Two different kinds of communism. I was in Seoul over Christmas and we talked alot about North and South Korea.

Watch this VBS documentary for Vice guide to North Korea. Its pretty amazing. Here is link to the first one. There are 14 of them but the 13th is the coolest and yet scariest thing I've ever seen.
